Rare antique large half-gallon (2 L) amber glass pharmacy bottle with original glass stopper in remarkable condition.
This big old plain heavy glass bottle with its round shoulder and long neck is a chemical lab or pharmacy bottle. Large embossed M 5 mark (unknown origin) on the slightly convex bottom with a central 5 number. This old bottle probably dates from the early 20th century, c. 1910. Numerous glass imperfections and bubbles are found on the body of the jar, and the V line on the slightly convex bottom is an imperfection due to manufacturing. One vertical seam line on each side. It is closured with a ground glass shank stopper that matches perfectly with the ground bore. Ground stopper with pontil. It is uncommon to find such a big glass bottle in perfect condition. It may be a shop furniture bottle as amber was used for its perceived light protective qualities. Such large bottles were also called Druggist's Packing Bottle. The long neck and ground stopper indicate that the big bottle was used to store liquids called "tincture" bottles. Acid bottles were fitted with a ground glass stopper instead of simply sealed with a cork.
